Facebook went offline for lots of customers on Thursday, with the world's most popular social media informing users that "something failed".

When going to Facebook.com, instead of seeing the normal homescreen or news feed, users were greeted with a blank display and a short mistake message.

" Sorry, something went wrong. We're working with it as well as we'll get it fixed as quickly as we can," the message reads.

The failure began at around 5.30 pm BST however, for most users, showed up to have been settled around 20 minutes after.

Down Detector, which collects reports of preferred services being down, displayed blackouts in the UK, Europe and also the US.

The website dropped on Thursday mid-day and also brief-ly showed up to function once more for some users.

A representative for Facebook has claimed they are considering what happened.

Meanwhile, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook chief executive, went to an event placed on by Oculus, the virtual reality headset company Facebook possesses.
